Today’s Lesson: How to Lose a Customer with your First Words

June 28th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I was at my parents house today supervising the Comcast cable guy when this crazy-looking lady, carrying a box of unknown contents, walked up to our front door. Since the cable guy was installing the line, we’d left the storm door unlocked, so I ran to the door to intercept her.

I opened the storm door a small crack. I asked the crazy-looking lady, “How can I help you?”

She started off by saying, “I don’t know if you read English, but I’m walking door-to-door, selling books,” as she reached into her box, waving a paperback book at me.

I interrupted her, “Sorry, I don’t read English.”

“Oh, you don’t?” the crazy-looking lady asked, flustered and perplexed. “Because you speak English very well.”

“Thank you,” I said, as I locked the door in front of her.
